Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Ah yes, the book that started it all. For some reason, there was something so compelling about the cover of two pale hands holding an apple that everyone picked it up, loved it, and slowly it became a worldwide phenomenon. There was nothing like it at the time. Of course there were novels about vampires falling in love but those were scattered throughout the romance and fantasy genres. This was what paved the way for young adults to have a place at the bookstore. If you ask many readers and authors about this book, many people will say that it was absolutely a life changing time for them in some way, shape or form. The writing structure is very easy to read and Bella is very relatable to what it’s like for the awkward girl in high school, she just so happens to get swept away in an adventure as she falls in love with vampire, Edward Cullen. It’s addicting, fun, and for us holds such nostalgia. If you’re in high school, we can’t recommend this one enough!

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Twilight was just the beginning of the vampire craze. This one combined a Harry Potter like school setting with the Twilight vampire hype and flourished into something completely on its own. It’s essentially about different kinds of vampires going to school together and as the series continues things get intense. There’s a heart stopping romance, actionpacked sequences, and genuine friendships. Readers follow along with Rose Hathaway who is feisty, strong, powerful, witty, hilarious and is still a fan favorite character.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

This series is one of our all time favorites because it is so complex and there is so much to the world. Author Cassie Clare is a genius and has intertwined different series set in the shadowhunter world. These can be read as standalones, however it is so much fun to go in order and read them all! You understand it more and characters that are in one series will show up again in the other ones.

It is a little complicated to explain the synopsis on The Moral Instruments, her first series, as the world is so vast. Basically the shadowhunters fight the demons to keep the world safe with the powers and their tattoo-like runes that are drawn on them with a tool called a stele. There are vampires, werewolves, faeries, and more in the shadowhunter world! The first series follows protagonist Clary who gets entangled into this world after her mom is taken. She meets shadowhunter Jace, along with his siblings, and learns all about this secret world that she is a part of.

We fell in love with this series in high school and Cassie is still going with more series in this incredible world! Reading her books are like going home for us, we love living in the shadowhunter world she has created and we highly recommend them!

Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling

Although we had grown up reading the Harry Potter series, we loved rereading them and experiencing the books again in high school. It’s such a feel good series to return to no matter how old you are, and it always makes us so happy. This is a series that though it is a children’s book, is enjoyable to everyone no matter how old! We love going back to Harry Potter for fun or when I am in a book slump, it always helps to go back to hogwarts and hang out with familiar friends.

Shiver Series

The Shiver series by Maggie Stiefvater was one of our favorites in high school. Werewolves were in when we were in high school and this was one of the best wolf book series. It follows Sam who spends the cold winter months as a wolf, watching over Grace’s house until he is able to return in the spring. When they meet and sparks fly, Sam is determined to stay human. Maggie’s writing style is so unique and lyrical and the story itself is touching. We would love to return to this series one day and relive it as adults.
